Egg:
Larva: "a fully grown larva ... shaped as in B. polydamas, but dull purple in colour, each segment marked with grey-edged black transverse and laterally oblique lines, with tubercles pale yellow or yellowish purple, fleshy tentacles dull yellow at the base and grey-yellow distallly and the osmeterium bright yellow" Smith et al. (1994:164);
Torre (1947); "mature larvae", "Iridescent purple color on prolegs" Tyler et al. (1994:120).
Pupa: "pale buff with fine, slightly darker 'graffiti' on thorax and abdomen with pale yellow shades at wing bases" Smith et al. (1994:164).

Habitat:
From sea level to, at least, 200 m.
- "sintopica con B. polydamas", "un'area ... con vegetazione mista di tipo xerico" [Cuba] Racheli & Pariset (1992:49);
- "generally associated with pineland and adjacent scrub" [Bahamas] Smith et al. (1994:164);
- [Cuba] Torre (1947);
- "Seasonal (Monsoon) Forest" Tyler et al. (1994:50);
- "remnant calcitic woodland with permanent water and lots of Zanthoxylum" [Cuba] Tyler et al. (1994:183);

Phenology:
- "March to May and again in August and September, apparently in two broods" [Cuba] Riley (1975:143);
- [Cuba] Torre (1947);

Adult:
- "sfruttano le ricorse alimentari costituite da Lantana camara dalle ore 12 alle 14, mentre nelle altre ore gli individui pattugliano un'area di circa un chilometro di diametro" Racheli & Pariset (1992:49);
- "Other than when visiting flowers, its flight is swift and powerful" Smith et al. (1994:164);

Egg:
Eggs are probably laid directly onto the larval hostplant.

Larva:
Larvae feed exclusively on vines of the genus Aristolochia (Aristolochiaceae); the following hostplant species have been recorded:
Aristolochia elegans [Bahamas]: Smith et al. (1994:164);

Conservation:
The species is included by Tyler et al. (1994:177) in a list of 'critical New World Swallowtail species' as "poorly known". Battus devilliersii has not been included in the IUCN 'Red Data Book' (Collins & Morris 1985).

In: Godart, J.B. 1823. Description de quelques espèces nouvelles de lépidoptères diurnes. Mémoires de la Société Linnéenne de Paris, 2: 226-243; pls. 19-21.
Type specimen(s): Syntype(s), originally in coll. [probably lost].
Type locality: "" [Cuba].
Comments: The original plates of Godart's paper were never published. In most of the literature, the species is referred to or listed as "Battus devilliers (Godart, 1824)" which refers to another publication by the same author that appeared later than the original description.

Taxonomy:
No synonyms or infraspecific taxa are known.
